Today is VE Day but this early nineteenth century sentiment transcends time.
Lines cut on a stone Sentry Box at Gibraltar and copied in 1822 by the late Lieutenant (afterwards General) Marcus John Slade, 75th Regiment:

"God and Soldier all men adore
In time of trouble, and no more,
For when the war is over,
And all things righted,
God is neglected,
And the Old Soldier slighted."
