Joseph Shakery

Joseph Shakery was a prominent nineteenth century Gibraltar businessman who was appointed to the first Sanitary Commission by the Governor in 1865.

Many years earlier, he was the subject of an incident that was recorded as follows: Mr Joseph Shakery was waylaid this morning by two armed men on the San Roque road and immediately conveyed by them to the mountains. The Alcalde of San Roque sent at once a party of soldiers who succeeded in rescuing Mr Shakery, killing one of the bandits and capturing the other one.

His Excellency the Governor wrote a letter to the Alcalde of San Roque thanking him for the very active and effective measures he took which led to the rescue of Mr Shakery.
