Minister for Heritage Prof John Cortes, accompanied by Prof Clive Finlayson, Director of the Gibraltar National Museum and members of the Museum team, as well as Government Archaeologist Dominic Lopez, hosted a visit to the Moorish Castle for the local Press.

The visit provided an opportunity to show the extensive restoration works being carried out on the Medieval Castle and Tower of Homage. All the work is being done under the close supervision of the Gibraltar National Museum.

Minister Cortes said: "This is the first time in centuries that restoration work to this extent has been done to the Castle, and it is the first time too that we are working towards restoring as much as possible to its original structure and layout. The change is incredible. It once again looks like a castle, and when interpretation is added both in relation to the medieval history and its more recent use as dungeons, the experience will be unique. Its connection to the Northern Defences will open a new experience of history, adventure and fun for our residents and tourists alike. The improvements we are making to our heritage and to both our home and touristic recreational product constitute a veritable revolution. I can hardly wait for this to open for all to experience in the coming months."
