Modern History El Quarry

Most of you will be familiar with the local name of "El Quarry" for Camp Bay. Where does the name come from?

Several quarries were opened up during the construction of the dockyard
between 1894 and 1906. One of these, the Europa Quarry was at Camp Bay. Other quarries were opened at 'Puente Basura' (between Eastern Beach and Catalan Bay), Catalan Bay, Monkey's (behind Sandy Bay) and North Front.

These quarries produced material for rubble filling and limestone ashlar work. The rubble and dressed limestone for the South Mole extension came mainly from the Europa Quarry. The rubble for the Detached and North Moles came mainly from Catalan Bay and North Front. The roughly dressed limestone for the dockyard buildings came from Catalan Bay and Monkey's Quarries.

Sand was obtained from the slopes on the east side of the Rock.
