The 1934 Gibraltar Directory reported on the visit as follows:
"Arrival of H.H. the Khalifa, the Spanish High Commissioner, (Sr. Moles), and H.E. General Gomez Morato, C.-in-C. of Spanish forces in Morocco, on a farewell visit to H.E. the Governor and Lady Godley. They arrived from Ceuta in the Spanish gunboat “Eduardo Dato” and were rendered the usual salutes and honours. H.M.S. “Frobisher” and the D.C.L.I. supplied guards of honours. Reception held at Government House which was attended by the Senior Civil, Naval and Military Officers, representatives of public bodies, and prominent citizens. Sr. Moles presented Sir Alexander Godley with the “Gran Cruz de Merito” of the Spanish Republic. H.H. the Khalifa presented the “Gran Encomienda de la orden Jalifiana” to Sir Alexander and other presentations to the following:-
Comendadores de Numero – Rear-Admiral Austin and Brig. the Hon. D. M. King.
Comendadores de Ordinario – Lt.-Col. theHon. A. E. Bettie, and Mr. H. J. Norton.
Caballeros – Lt.Cdr. G. Clayton and Capt. E. R. Mahony.
The distinguished visitors, accompanied by Sir Alexander visited the places of interest in Gibraltar, were entertained to luncheon at Governor’s Cottage and Rock Hotel, had tea on board H.M.S. “Resolution” with Rear-Admiral Austin, and later left in the “Eduardo Dato” for Ceuta."
