Glass fire grenades as early fire extinguishers
These glass fire grenades became popular in the late 19th century and continued to be used for part of the 20th century in homes and businesses. During this period, homes were built using highly flammable materials. Floors and ceilings were usually made of wood and numerous pieces of fabric were used for curtains and bed - add to this several possible ignition points such as candles, stoves, fireplaces and paraffin lamps.
They were designed to be launched into the centre of the fire at its base. The glass would shatter on impact, extinguishing the fire. They would contain salt water or carbon tetrachloride.
