Was Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s visit the only royal visit to have taken place on the 10th May? We searched our archives and came up with a few surprises:
10 May, 1802: Arrival of the Isis conveying His Royal Highness the Duke of Kent, K. G,., the new Governor of Gibraltar.
- Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and Strathearn, was son of King George III and, later, the father of the future Queen Victoria. He is Queen Elizabeth II’s great-great-great grandfather.
10 May, 1859: His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales returned to this Fortress from his excursion into Spain at 6 o’clock p.m. After honouring the Governor with his company at dinner, His Royal Highness, accompanied by the Governor, proceeded in His Excellency’s carriage through the town to witness the illuminations which, without any previous notice, the inhabitants had spontaneously prepared to celebrate the presence of the Prince. Enthusiastic cheering from the assembled crowd attended His Royal Highness’s progress.
- Albert, The Prince of Wales in 1859, was the 17-year old son of Queen Victoria and grandson of Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and Strathearn. He would later become King Edward VII, Queen Elizabeth II’s great grandfather
10 May, 1888: The King of Sweden and Norway arrived on board the Swedish steam-corvette Freja. His Majesty travelled incognito and was not officially received, and sailed for Lisbon the following day.
- Oscar II was King of Sweden from 1872 until his death in 1907. He was also the last King of Norway until he was deposed in 1905.
